August Highlights & Lowlights
Hey, you sexy, gorgeous people!
I hope you have had an amazing summer and aren’t too depressed we’re heading into September. I personally absolutely love Fall and October is my absolute favourite month of the year because I adore Halloween. I’m not one for dressing up, I just much more prefer taking myself to a haunted jail or watching scary movies that seem to have no impact on me anymore, but I still enjoy.
When I had my old blog (The Beauty Viewer) I would do monthly favourites and one of my gorgeous followers from Brazil mailed me recently and asked me to bring this section back on my new blog, I, of course, will give the people want they want.
However, I decided to switch it up ever so slightly as my previous blogs consisted of just beauty products and the odd occasion I’d add in a book I was reading. Just having beauty products isn’t going to sit well because I have some amazing male readers who haven’t touched a beauty or makeup product in their lives (I gotchu Jay, Scott and Pádraig!)
Some of the links below are Amazon affiliate links which means I may get a small amount of money if you use the link to purchase any of the products, below. It also ensures that you are given real-time price information as a lot of the time Amazon will have some sort of sale on. This does not have any impact on your purchase and you will not be charged any more than what the product itself and delivery costs. At present there are no other affiliate links, but if this changes I will of course update this section.
So, without further ado let’s dive into the highlights and lowlights of my August.
Note from Author: I have linked several products, below. None of these product links are affiliate links (I wish) and I am not being paid to promote these products. These are genuinely my faves of the month.
Song of the Month
I absolutely love my music, I still have a classic iPod with tonnes of music on it, I did have over 10,000, but it corrupted which was fabulous so I’m starting over. I listen to pretty much anything, like my blog, I don’t have a music niche, however, I am quite a good rapper!
One song I have been listening to most of August was Kesha – Praying if you haven’t heard this song, then please go and give it a listen. It’s such a beautiful, soulful and heartbreaking song. It’s definitely one when you need a good cry and I’m sure we can all relate the song to someone in particular.
Album of the Month
Hamilton Ost, need I say more? For those of you who have been living under a rock or aren’t usually follows of the theatre then you may not know of the amazingness that is Hamilton. It’s a musical based on the life of Alexander Hamilton who was one of the founding fathers of the US.
I, unfortunately, have not had the pleasure of seeing Hamilton live, yet. My cousin and I both absolutely adore the theatre, mostly musicals. My all-time favourite musical (in case your interested) is Cats which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Funny, considering I’m not actually a cat person, but Elaine Paige and the rest of the original cast are absolutely incredible. I think I loved it so much as a kid because Rosemarie Ford was my idol at the time. For you youngsters out there, you probably won’t remember the original ‘The Generation Game” which was hosted by Bruce Forsyth (RIP Brucie xo) and originally had Rosemarie as his glamorous assistant.
Anyways, back to Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr and the rest of the cast are absolutely incredible singers. I had the first song “Alexander Hamilton” which gives a summary of who Alexander is and where he comes from, stuck in my head for pretty much all of August and I think I’ve just about mastered all the words to the album (high five to me!) If you are like me and love your musical’s then go give Hamilton a listen. I’ve linked the album above, but you can also get it on Spotify.
Book of the Month
I have so many books, it’s actually sinful. I’ve tonnes I haven’t even read, so instead of being one of those girls that have stuff in her wardrobe that she hasn’t even worn, I have books I haven’t even read in my bookcase and I’m pretty sure it drives my husband absolutely bananas. He isn’t really a reader, prefers podcasts…
Even though I have all these amazing books to read, I found myself picking up one of my oldies, but goodies. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, you can pick this book up from Amazon if you are interested. I highly recommend it if you are interested in the history of the human and where we may go in the future. If you aren’t already following me on GoodReads, then please come and join me. I am northernirishgirlonline and I tend to write book reviews and post them on GoodReads and my blog.
Audible of the Month
I’ve recently started doing some takeaway deliveries in the evenings, just as a bit of extra money to get rid of this bloody debt and also to save for moving. I can’t always have my nose in a book as I sit in my car waiting for deliveries to be made so I’m lucky enough that I have Audible. I’m an Amazon Prime member and I honestly cannot recommend Audible enough.
I absolutely adore Mindy Kaling, if you haven’t seen The Mindy Project then I highly suggest you go find it, download it and binge watch it. Not just for the absolute hilarity that ensues, but for the absolutely gorgeous Chris Messina he is currently in Sharp Objects on Netflix but has been in so many other amazing shows and movies. He is also a fellow harelip postoperative survivor. Google him, you will not be disappointed, I do love a man that can dance!
I got off topic and very distracted by Chris and forgot to say what book of Mindy’s I’ve been listening to (she has more than one). I have just finished Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). She gives an honest, hilarious view of being an Indian woman living in America, she talks about the usual love, life and just being a living legend. I cannot recommend watching her show (she was also in the American version of The Office) and getting all of her books whether it’s through Audible (I’d recommend mind this choice), or through a paperback.
Movie of the Month
I am going to have to go with Step Brothers, I have seen Stepbrothers so many times that I could play a part in “Boats and Hoes” (I kindly linked you to the Youtube video, you’re totally welcome). I absolutely love Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly when they work together, they’ve done quite a few films together and they are brilliant. The hubby and I are very big Will Ferrell fans, and often quote something Will has said in one of our movies to each other and say “Guess the film!” I know, we’re actual geeks, but it keeps us entertained. Glenn (my hubby) is such a big Anchorman fan that he wanted to call our little Tank (our rescue dog) Baxter after the dog in Anchorman. I obviously put my foot down because Tank is clearly a Tank. Here are some pics for proof.
If you want a laugh then definitely go with Step Brothers if you haven’t seen it, or if you have then watch it again. Just a pre-warning it’s full of toilet style humour and there is a lot of swearing, but if you don’t mind any of that then it’s such a funny film.
TV Show of the Month
I’ll be honest, I can’t remember the last time I binge watched a show. However, in early August I did finish off Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons and the latest available season of Suits on Netflix. Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons is a documentary-style show that looks inside the walls of some of the most dangerous and tough prisons in America. It’s an interesting watch, but some topics might be triggering to some people, an example being sex offenders and paedophile’s who try to hide the fact they are paedophile’s.
Suits is a show based on the lawyers of a US Law firm and I am obsessed with it. I’m devastated it’s over (thanks for that Meghan Markle). Meghan Markle found her fame here, alongside Patrick J. Adams (he’s married to Troian Bellisario aka Spencer Hastings from PLL, check out their Instagram’s they’re actually adorable together).
It’s an amazing show and there is a lot of drama, a bit of sex, falling in love and your usual tongue in cheek humour. It does reference some legal cases and there is some in trial clips, but not as much as I’d personally like. It’s worth a watch if your into that kind of thing, but you have to have Netflix to watch, it might be available on Hulu, and you can rent the seasons from Amazon Prime if you have it.
Makeup Product of the Month
Honestly, you have no idea how difficult it was to pick just one makeup product so I chose two, hehe. Given all the shit that is going down with the beauty community on Youtube at the minute, I’ve seen all the “apology” videos and if I’m honest, I’m sorta bored of the whole thing, now. I’m also not one bit surprised, anyone who works in the beauty or hair industry will tell you that there are plenty of Regina George’s out there (for those of you that don’t know Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams is a fictitious character from the movie, Mean Girls). That’s really all I’m going to say on the matter.
- BPerfect Cosmetics LMD Master Palette
For those of you who don’t live in the U.K. BPerfect Cosmetics is owned by the gorgeous
Brendan McDowell and is a very well known brand, especially in Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland (ROI). They do a lot more than just makeup and I honestly urge you to check out their website as their products are stupidly cheap, but amazing quality. I have yet to meet anyone who has been able to tell me any different. Brendannnnn put me on your PR listttt, pleaseeeeeeeee!!!
LMD is another very well known business owner especially in the North and South of Ireland, Louise McDonnell teamed up with Brendan and the BPerfect Cosmetics team to create this palette which I included a picture of above is just stunning. The colours are amazing and that highlight, oh my goodness, that HIGHLIGHT! The amount of people that stop me in the street and ask me where my highlight is from, even when I was at my ENT appointment a few months ago every single nurse (and even the Consultant) asked me what product I was using, how I managed to make it look so flawless and where they could get it from. Honestly, if that doesn’t get me on Brendan’s PR list then nothing will, lol! As you all probably know, I’m a super fan of anyone from Ireland that does well for themselves (Jamie Dornan, especially -insert drool emoji here-) so I try to make sure I include them somehow, whether it’s through retweeting their new work or buying their products. I wouldn’t recommend them if they were shit, though, I promise.
2. Jeffree Star Cosmetics Blood Sugar Palette
For those of you who don’t know who Jeffree Star is… I can’t relate. Click his name to be directed to his Youtube channel. I am a huge fan of Jeffree’s products, every single time he delivers, absolutely every single time.
I have the majority of his nude and red liquid lipsticks and I have all his eyeshadow palettes. Blood Sugar is probably his most popular one to date. It sold out in seconds, but I was extremely lucky to get it. You can buy it on Jeffree’s website or, he is now also on Beauty Bay.
I mean, I don’t know what else to say other than look at those colours, I’m a nude girl myself so I’ve used the pinks and browns, mostly. However, in autumn I do tend to go for a nice deep red smoky look so the reds and the purples are going to be insane for that look and I cannot wait!
Beauty Product of the Month
I have to go with BPerfect Cosmetics 10 Second Tan Mousse. I got the medium mousse which I think is coconut scented? It’s such a class product and the results are amazing. I should be a tanned girl, given my heritage but I just don’t go out in the sun as much as I really need to so I am pale AF. I’m not a fan of sunbeds for obvious reasons, I dunno about you, but I always feel more beautiful/sexier with a tan and I think my skin looks a lot healthier.
I picked up the BPerfect 10 Second Tan Mousse when I was shopping in Belfast one afternoon. I actually got the special packaged one that came with a tanning mitt. I wasn’t really holding out much hope if I’m honest as I am so shit at doing my tan, but it looked so natural and didn’t have the usual stink of fake tan which I was delighted about. It develops quickly (hence 10 Second Tan title) and it lasts a good wee while I think the most I got out of it was just over a week without massive noticeable patches which I thought was amazing as I shower twice a day and didn’t think I’d used that much product.
I’ve linked BPerfect Cosmetic’s website above when talking about LMD’s palette so please go give them a look. They are also on all social media, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, etc. You really don’t need an awful lot of product so the mousse lasts you a good while. I’ve still got at least half a tin (is it a tin? It’s an aerosol type packaging, so that’s a tin, right?) left before I need to pick up anymore.
So, the first thing is the loss of my hero, my granda. He was the funniest, kindest, most amazingly strong man you would ever meet in your life. Up until 2018 he literally thought he was the only Atheist in the family, I had to break it to him that 90% of his offspring and their children were also Atheist. He was an absolute geag (Northern Irish slang for hilarious). He had been fighting cancer for as long as I can remember and would beat it, only for it to come back somewhere else. I want to say he fought and beat cancer at least 9 times.
He lost my gorgeous wee granny a few years ago and ever since then when I would go visit him, he’d talk about how much he missed her and wanted to be with her. As his eldest granddaughter, this was extremely difficult to hear, but I totally understood. My grandparents were so in love, even when I got married 9 years ago, my grandparents sat holding hands. He absolutely doted on her and she on him, now that is a marriage to live up to.
From the end of July, he had started to go downhill and was in and out of the hospital a few times. This did occasionally happen previously, but when I’d ring dad he’d tell me granda was sleeping a lot more. I knew when they brought his bed down from downstairs that he didn’t have long. He passed away last week, I chose not to see him before he passed because I wanted to remember my granda how he was in life. Full of chatter, strong as an ox and just an incredible inspiration. I don’t regret my decision, but I do miss him.
Another lowlight for me which is nowhere near as important as losing granda, but more annoying than anything else is my period (lads, skip this part if you don’t wanna read about women’s problems). I have had my period (and I shit you not) for 3 weeks, 3-fucking-weeks. It seems to actually be getting heavier and I’ve got to the point, now where I’m doubling up pads because I’m leaking (ohhhh the joys and the men think we have it easy?!)
It’s usually light to medium and lasts a week, last month it lasted 2 weeks and was medium, but this month it’s 3+ weeks and went from light to heavy. I’m super lucky I never, ever get cramps (touch wood), but you ladies know the feeling when you move or lift your leg to walk and the gush happens -insert vomit emoji here-. My clots are also pretty big, the biggest one being about the size of the base of a cupcake case.
I get that August is the beginning of Fall, but it’s still supposed to be hot. The weather in Northern Ireland has been absolutely abysmal. I still managed to get some gorgeous pictures when I was out with the hubby and our wee Tinkle Tits (Tank, the dog). You can find them on my Instagram, if you don’t follow me there then you can find me, here.
Another lowlight was the amount of negativity I have seen online. I did a blog post on this which you can find, here. I am just getting so sick of it, why can’t people just be kind? Why do people think they are entitled to bully and put people down, no one is perfect so I don’t see how they can comment on others. I got a tonne of shit from a hater, who I was actually defending. This ended up in her screenshotting what I’d said and then I got a tonne of messages from her “friends” calling me ugly, a dickhead, a slut, a whore…you get it. Funny, if they actually bothered to check my profile or my blog they’d know I’m married and have been with my husband for 14 years. Her brother also called me a “waste of oxygen” and a “useless cunt”. I happen to like the word “cunt” so that one made me smile. Did Twitter do anything when I reported it? Did they fuck!
Facebook, Facebook, Facebook… oh how I loathe thee. I don’t have Facebook on my phone anymore and I had deactivated it but reactivated it to thank people for their kind messages following my granda’s passing as I wasn’t going to be able to reply to them all. While I was on there I tried to change my MUA page to a page for my blog. Facebook decided that, no I couldn’t do that. Despite it being a “business” and having a link to my site. No, no, it’s misleading… I appealed the decision and got the same response that I’d received when they said no the first time. I’ll be honest, I lost my shit and replied giving them a piece of my mind, purely because I found it to be just so lazy and not at all how an appeal procedure should go. I’m still waiting on a response… especially when I asked how certain other pages are able to continue, despite them being absolutely nothing to do with their page title. I could create a new page, yes, but that would mean losing my current following, comments and testimonials.
I obviously have to talk about the loss of our beloved Bank building in Belfast City Centre. It was home to Primark and was such a well looked after and loved the piece of architecture in our City Centre. I am absolutely gutted that such a beautiful building has been destroyed because of one stupid wee arsehole’s stupidity. For those of you who don’t live in NI or the U.K. please Google Primark, Belfast City Centre, fire and you will see what I am talking about.
The story is that a construction worker left his blowtorch on and went for his lunch. For those of you that don’t know, you can actually hear if a blowtorch is left on and there’s the pretty obvious blue flame or of course the orange/yellow flame. Anyone with the slightest bit of sense would double check something like that was turned off. I’m sure the guy lost his job, he should be thanking his lucky stars that he isn’t facing criminal damage charges…
The place went up in flames pretty quickly and every single floor was burnt to a crisp. Luckily, no one was injured, but dozen’s of people have lost their personal effects and have now got no job to go to. I’m not sure how it works, do Primark continue to pay these people? Or, what is happens there? I know they are looking for other buildings to reopen the store asap, but the damage that has been done is shocking.
Looking forward to September as I’ll be officially working four jobs, technically five if you count my blog, but I don’t get paid for my blog, so… I’m determined to kick this debt I have in the ass and get it gone as soon as possible, I honestly feel like I can’t live a normal life at the moment, I’m scared to even buy myself a t-shirt at the minute because I really shouldn’t be spending money on clothes or takeout (I’ve become obsessed with the ice cream from the place I do deliveries for, not to mention the Flake McFlurrys from McDonald’s).
Hope you enjoyed my highlight’s at least.
Take care, be safe and look after one another.
